Record number of international visitors at German trade fairs Over 500,000 of the foreign visitors come from overseas
13.10.2005 The international trade fairs in Germany registered a record number of foreign visitors in 2004. A total of 2.28 million visitors from all continents came to Germany in order to inform themselves and prepare their decisions. The previous highest figure was registered in 2001 with 2.1 million foreign visitors, in 2003 only 1.86 mill. – due to the lack of several fairs as a result of the rotation of events. The share of international visitors of the overall total of 9.675 million, exceeded the 20% mark for the first time, with a figure of 23.5%.
The survey conducted by AUMA – the Association of the German Trade Fair Industry – which has now been concluded shows that, for the first time, over 500.000 visitors came from countries outside Europe. The leading region was East, Southeast and Central-Asia with 190,000 visitors, followed by the Middle East (95.000).
As a result, around an eighth of all foreign visitors, a total of 285,000 came from Asia. This number indicates that the German trade fairs are not only important presentation platforms for export products from Asia; Asian importers make equally intensive use of the international character of German trade fairs in order to inform themselves about new products from Germany and other countries.
Of the 140,000 visitors from America, almost two thirds came from North America (85,000) and just over one third from Latin America (55.000). A further 55,000 visitors were registered from Africa.
The European countries provided around 78% of all foreign visitors. Of this total, 1,390,000 came from the expanded EU and 385,000 from the remaining European countries. Since the year 2000, Europe’s share has thus declined by about four percentage points. At the same time, Asia’s share has grown on practically the same scale.
