Exhibition Centres in Germany: Investments planned in the amount of 550 million euros

Sustainability is taken into account in construction measures at trade fairs. As with the new Hall 5 at Messe Frankfurt, which was developed as a new construction project in the existing building. The hall roof is completely greened.

By 2027, exhibition companies in Germany wish to invest more than 550 million euros in their exhibition centres. This is the finding of a survey conducted by the German Trade Fair Association, AUMA, amongst its members. These funds will flow primarily into the modernisation and refurbishment of exhibition halls and conference venues. In doing so, there is to be a particular focus on energy-related measures such as the installation and expansion of photovoltaic systems and wind energy systems, the retrofitting of LED lighting, and the integration of energy-efficient cooling systems. Furthermore, exhibition centres plan to invest in electric mobility and digital infrastructure. Measures also include the conversion of outdoor areas and building roofs into green spaces. For this year alone, investments amounting to 200 million euros are planned.

In 2022, around 145 million euros were spent on refurbishments, the development of the WLAN and LTE infrastructure, conferencing and events technology, fire protection, maintenance, and charging stations for electric vehicles.

The survey questioned 24 exhibition centres in Germany that have hosted at least one trade fair classified by AUMA as a national or international trade fair. These centres currently offer exhibition spaces spanning a total of 2.8 million square metres. Trade fair and exhibition venues that are of regional significance also offer a gross exhibition area of around 380,000 square metres, meaning that Germany currently has just under 3.2 million square metres of exhibition space at its disposal for hosting trade fairs.

Some 70 trade fair venues located between the North Sea and Lake Constance make the German exhibition scene unique the world. Over two thirds of the world’s leading trade fairs take place in this region. At peak times, international, national and regional trade fairs in Germany attract more than 235,000 exhibiting companies and 16 million visitors. On average, 60 percent of exhibitors and 35 percent of professional visitors to all leading trade fairs travel from abroad.
