German Exhibition Centre: Capacity slightly increased

Berlin, 3 March 2024 | 2.86 million square metres of hall space are currently available at German trade fair venues of national or international importance. This is a slight increase of just under 60,000 square metres (+ 2.1 percent) compared to the previous year. This is the result of a survey conducted by the Association of the German Trade Fair Industry (AUMA) at the beginning of 2024. The survey included 25 exhibition centres in Germany that hosted at least one trade fair classified as national or international by AUMA.

The increase is due to the opening of the newly constructed Hall 5 at Messe Frankfurt. The Estrel Congress Centre ECC in Berlin, which hosts two international trade fairs, was also added. Trade fair and exhibition venues of regional importance have an additional gross hall area of around 380,000 square metres. This means that there are currently over 3.2 million square metres of hall space available for trade fairs in Germany - an area the size of 448 football pitches. There are no plans to expand the exhibition centres on a larger scale this year.

In 2023, over 160 million euros were invested in the infrastructure and modernisation of halls and grounds. This sum was spent, for example, on renovating and expanding halls, improving IT and technical equipment as well as sustainability efforts through photovoltaic systems and LED lighting.

According to the International Federation of the Exhibition Industry (UFI), there are 1,425 exhibition centres worldwide with 42.1 million square metres of hall space. Europe accounts for the largest share of this with 15.7 million square metres (37.2 percent), a fifth of which is in Germany alone. A further 36.6 per cent of the total exhibition space is located in Asia/Pacific, just under 18 per cent in North America, 4.4 per cent in Latin and South America and 3.9 per cent in the Middle East and Africa // KS/AB
